How is educational therapy different from tutoring?Educational therapy and tutoring are very different. While the goal of tutoring is to support “what” students learn; educational therapy focuses on “how” to learn. Tutoring may attempt to reteach subject matter that a student does not master in class. Educational therapy, on the other hand, addresses the underlying causes of "why" a student was unable to master classroom material in the first place. Unlike tutoring, educational therapy aims intervention just above the student's level of functioning and raises expectations for performance. Educational therapy recognizes individual learning styles and places an emphasis on self-awareness, self-advocacy, and strategy use to reinforce information processing and remediate areas of weakness. In educational therapy, students work to view themselves as competent, confident learners, as they develop clear, efficient thinking tools that optimize learning and enable them to be successful in school and in life.. |
